Newly appointed Department of Energy (DoE) Secretary Jose Isidro N.
Camacho is new in government service, but he brings with him the instincts and acumen of a
seasoned banker and a veteran businessman.
Sec. Camacho honed his business skills in the field of banking where he
worked for most of his life. From 1979 to 1981, he was the Assistant Treasurer and Asia
International Officer of Bankers Trust Company (BTC) in New York. He rose to become the
Vice President and General Manager of the BTC and was responsible for the overall business
in the Philippines and marketed to the major clients including government agencies,
corporations, and financial institutions. He also represented BTC in the restructuring
negotiations with both the government and specific borrowers after the debt crisis in 1983
and helped develop and execute the first debt-for-equity transactions in the country even
before the Central Bank-sponsored program was put in place. In 1989, he became Managing
Director (with Partner status) and Country Head for the Philippines. Ultimately, in 1998,
he became the Managing Director of BTC and became the Head of South Asia Investment
Banking managing the investment banking business for Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Thailand, India and the Philippines.
He moved to Deutsche Bank AG in July 1999 as Managing Director and Head of Country
Coverage Function for Investment Banking for the Asian Region. Prior to his appointment to
the DoE post, he was the bank's Managing Director and Chief Country Officer for the
Philippines.
He received his BS in Mathematics, cum laude, from De La Salle University in 1975 and his
Master in Business Administration major in Finance from the Harvard Business School in
1979.
With Sec. Camacho's extensive exposure in the field of investment,
marketing, government negotiations, finance, and banking, it can be safely said that the
DoE is in very good hands. |
