The pride of Mindanaoans, Secretary Datumanong was a consistent honor student during his student days in Cotabato City. He eventually graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines and placed 12th in the 1959 Bar Examinations.

    Sec. Datumanong boasts of a long experience in public service as Governor of Cotabato (1968-1971), Governor of Maguindanao Province (1973-1975), Regional Assemblyman for two terms of Autonomous Region XII serving concurrently as Regional Chairman until 1984 and Member of the Regular Batasang Pambansa (1984-1986).

A third-termer, Sec. Datumanong was first elected to the 9th Congress as Representative of the 2nd District of Maguindanao and was also elected Assistant Majority Floor Leader. He was re-elected in 1995 (and was also elected this time as Deputy Speaker) and again in 1998. During his legislative stint, he was voted Outstanding Member of the 9th Congress, Outstanding Leader of the 10th Congress, and Outstanding Older Legislator of the 11th Congress.

    Sec. Datumanong is recipient of other awards and citations, most notably the Ten Outstanding Young Men Award in Public Administration in 1974.
   
    Sec. Datumanong is married to the former Hadja Sittie Mariam Sigrid De Guzman and has four children.
