PGMA returns from 3-day APEC Leaders' Summit via Hong Kong

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo arrived this afternoon from Hong Kong where she spent the weekend with her family and met with business leaders of the former British colony and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) after she attended the 13th leaders’ summit of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Busan, South Korea on Nov. 17-19.

The President took a commercial flight of the Philippine Air Lines (PAL) from Hong Kong and arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal II shortly after 1 p.m.

She was met at the NAIA by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Generoso Senga, Philippine National Police (PNP) Deputy Director General Oscar Calderon and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) officials.

Following the brief airport arrival honors, the President rushed to Malacanang to attend to several official functions, including a roundtable discussion of the APEC summit, a meeting with visiting Spanish Defense Minister Jose Bono Martinez, and the awarding of the 2nd International Maritime Awards at the Rizal Hall of the Palace.

Aside from her APEC schedule in the Korean port and industrial city of Busan, the venue of the APEC leaders’ summit, the President was conferred an honorary doctor of laws degree by the Kyungsung University.

She held one-on-one meetings with US President George W. Bush, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and other APEC leaders on the side of the summit meeting and discussed issues of mutual interest to their respective countries. (full story)
